Backgrounds with gelatos and stencils : Tutorial

Hello everyone,
Riswana here today with my last post as Lulupu DT.! It has been a great journey being here with Karuna, super cool and sweet all the time, and my talented, supportive teamies Sindhu and Chirali. Thank you guys :* <3
I have a mixed media card and a small tutorial on how to create cool backgrounds with gelatos and stencils..

Let's begin with the steps:

1.Apply gesso
Apply one to two coats of gesso on the surface you are working on. This is crucial to get beautiful results..

2.Color with gelatos:
After the gesso has dried, apply gelatos in the desired color combination. It doesn't have to be perfect.!

3.Use stencil:
Place the stencil on the desired position (Here i have used the large stencil from Mudra so that it covers all of the surface). Use a wet baby wipe to wipe off the color through the exposed area of the stencil.

4.Seal with gel medium
Gelatos are not permanent. So it's better to seal it with gel medium. And the background is ready.!

Use different color combos and stencils to make beautiful backgrounds. Here's a mixed media card I made using the same technique.. Here i used multiple stencils.!

Sponged acrylic paints through stencils for the focal point, sentiment is from Mudra stamps.

Hope you liked it.! Here are some of my personal favorite Lulupu DT Projects :)

Thank you all so much for the support and love.! It means a lot :) <3

Create. Have fun.

Patchwork Wall Art with Stenciling techniques

Happy Wednesday Dear Crafters,
Shilpa here,
Confession !!
We are amazed by all your creative entries for

 Challenge #27
Lulupu 2nd Birthday Celebration

Today, I've created something special to inspire you more. It is a paper patchwork with stencilling. Lulupu store has got new  Memory Box stencils, and I couldn't wait to use them.

Confused? this is a part of Wall Art Piece, scroll down to view full image.
Before that, let's see the process and few techniques..

To start, I kept the stencil on piece of white paper (card stock).
And attached the edges of stencil to my craft mat with washi tape, so it doesn't move while colouring and gives crisp image.

I created this piece with Texture Rhapsody stencil and Gelatos colours-Pistachios,Green Tea.
For this technique, place the stencil on paper, fix it with washi tape/masking tape, apply Gelatos, and spread the colour through stencil with baby wipe. You can do shading with same colour or use different colours.

These two pieces are done with Crafters workshop Fancy Feathers stencil + LSG Bachelor Button Blue and Memory box Butterfly Vine stencil + LSG Poinsettia Red Gold respectively.
While using any spray with stencil, keep spray at one foot distance, be confident, and spray from one end to another. Ink will spread evenly and it won't puddle.

Here, I've used Memory box Texture Cressida stencil and Salty ocean distress ink. I applied the ink with ink blending  tool, very easy technique for quick backgrounds.

Lovely design, isn't it? Stencil name is Floral Mask. I applied Picked Rasspberry distress paint with sponge here.
Trick for this technique is, take little paint on sponge and pounce back on the mat 2-3 times and then apply. You can use any acrylic or water colour paints.

And when I put together all on one chipboard, it came out something like this... check it out...

How is it?do you like it?

You may ask, how did I get this effect, let me explain in short.

To give the finishing touches, I used distress inks at the edges and brought bit inside the page too, remember how Tim Holtz does this? And when I adhered all pieces together, I applied Vintage photo distress ink to all four sides, it gives the depth.

Embellishments - Die cut collectables are from Spring Bloom (Kaisercraft), metal trinkets, Prima sugar dots (red and sky blue), Tim holtz Tattered leaf die cuts, flowers.

So...what are you waiting for? grab new stencils and colours and try these techniques for wonderful backgrounds. Create card, Scrapbook Layout or any mixed media piece and show us at our current challenge # 27
Challenge ends on March 31st.

 or
on Lulupu facebook page,
.
Can't wait to see what you create!!

Lots of Love,
Shilpa

How To - Love-ly Mini Mixed Media Album

Hello beautiful Crafters !!
Shilpa here, hope you had great weekend!
Today, I would like to present A Love-ly Mini Album with Mixed Media Tutorial as we are still celebrating some love here at Lulupu this fortnight!.
The album has eight pages measuring 8"*6". It is held together with book ring. I tied pink and white satin and organza ribbon bows and charm on it.
(Caution: Picture heavy post)

Your response to my last month's tutorial was overwhelming and am very thankful that you all enjoyed learning. In continuation, this is a slightly advanced segment in our Mixed Media series. Let's begin...

Stage 1: Creating a texture base

Its always important to remember that for most mixed media work it doesn't matter how and what you begin with because you have alot of option to keep changing and updating and adding as you go :)

I've used heavy weight Chipboard and applied the new Sakura Gesso to prime the surface.
Before working on the surface, I used a Heat tool to completely dry the Gesso.
Next step was to add some texture. I started to apply Mod Podge to adhere Doilies and Gauze or anything you fancy. To add some more interest, I took out my Modelling paste which is also available on store now and Crafters Workshop stencils and did some stenciling at random spots on the surface. I dried it carefully with Heat Tool , it is important to keep some distance, as we can end up spoiling the shape of texture, when Heat Tool is very close (it might bubble up a bit).
I like to incorporate flowers and Laser cut wood veneer birds, beads onto my mixed media pieces, which I adhered with hot glue.

Mixed Media is very liberating, it is your art, your creation, it doesn't matter where you put things, just have a fun !!

Stage 2: Adding some colour

Next,I gave entire surface full coat of Gesso and quick zap of  heat tool to ensure its all in place.

I started spraying Lindy's Stamp Gang Starburst sprays. I used my heat tool in between all color layers to make sure they don't mix with each other and they blend beautifully.

Here you will see, I've used combination of pink, red and blue sprays. I blended pinks and reds on one side of surface and blues and green on the other.

And this is the final look of the first page of Mini album. Do you like it?

However, our theme of this fortnight challenge is 'Love project' using lots of Pattern Papers. And here another fun begins...

Lulupu has got fantastic new stock of Patterned Papers, don't miss the chance to add them in  your collection. In  Karuna's words, "Can we ever get  enough of pretty papers?" :) ...
I've used American Crafts XOXO full collection and some more papers from Printshop pad for this Mini Album, they are so lovely.
Above image shows  2nd page in the Mini album. It has envelope flap and when we open it , we can see...

three photo mats and journal tag. here are some more pictures..

let's see the third page...

I've made red photo mat for photo and green journal tag flap on the right to write about that particular photo. The flap is decorated with beautiful Bits die cut pieces came along with XOXO collection.
And when we open the fold...

some more photo mats and journaling tags.

Next two pages look something like this...

Here is another surprise...

look what we find inside, when we untie the ribbon...

7th page has large photo mat which can be pulled out with with flower tab. And aren't  that XOXO letters- bold and beautiful?

This is a last page of Mini Album.

I've also used We are Memory Keepers Stub/ Deco/Round corner chompers to get some fab corners for each page, photo mats and journal tags. Its' a must have for every crafter!
Cute little Memento inks are convenient to color and distress edges which also filled the color gaps on the album.

Hope you enjoyed  the tutorial and got motivated  to make a Mini Album for your loved ones..it can be for your spouse, partner, parents, friends or for daughters!

Lulupu Challenge #25  Oh So Love-ly
is open till February 15th, don't forget to linkup your project before that !

Happy Valentin's Day

Lots of Love,
Shilpa
