Guest Designer - Deepti Stephens & Shadow Box Tutorial

Some crafters steal our heart forever with their creations! And we are super excited to have the very talented Deepti Stephens yet again on Lulupu blog as a Guest Designer for Challenge 21 - Magical Memories

We have enjoyed her amazing projects every fortnight and we love her creativity and talent! Over to her!

Yay! I’m so happy to be the guest designer at Lulupu again. It’s a great honour for me. Thank you so much Karuna and Lulupu team for giving me this lovely opportunity.

I’m Deepti Stephens from Catchy Design Collections. I did BDS (Dentistry) but I’m not practicing. Currently working with my hubby, we have an Orphanage, Society and a Bible shop (we sell very rare books). Recently we’ve moved to a new home and I’m loving it. Now I’m working from home, finally got a little ‘me’ time.. :D.. I love to make crafts in a simple, fun and easy way and I love to share few tips and techniques on my Youtube Channel.

Okay! The challenge here at Lulupu is ‘Magical Memories’, with a picture as a focal point and with a framed look. I simply call it ‘frame your memories’.. :P So I’m here with a ‘Shadow Box’ for you guys! It’s so simple and easy to make. Here is what I made.. J

That’s my sissy and her hubby on their wedding day. I love this pic a lot..

Memories of 2013!!!

Hi ya!!!

I am here after a long time…. I was so idle for past few days, where i lost my craft mojo… Here i am back with an Inspiration for the current Lulupu challenge set by Prathiksha… When I heard about this challenge, I couldn't just think of one picture to work on… so I decided to make a photo box with all my favourite snaps and memorable moments of 2013 with a mixed media look to the front panel.

Here is what I made for the Lulupu Challenge #21 - Magical Memories

I went sooooo crazy selecting pictures for my photo box and it was also fun to go through all the picture s we took this year… felt like this year was pretty amazing… Especially we enjoyed the summer.

This is one picture which I loved because it completely reminds me of the awesome road trip to Bushkill falls, Philadelphia.

It is a wooden book box which opens like a drawer, where i loaded the picture. I started it with a base coat of Gesso and left it over night. Gave it textures with lace trim, tissue paper (from packaging), doilies, Die cuts, and modeling paste with stencils.

Tip on Modeling paste: Home made texture pastes are awesome But I mixed store bought Modelling paste / texture paste with dry coarse grinded wheat and gesso to give a coarse texture, I really loved how it turned out.

I randomly tried adding die cuts from stash (ofcourse digital die cuts), could you notice the tree branches die cut in the right and a  flourish die cut in the left. I was so happy how the tree die cut came out, it showed well after spraying….

The Spraying part was so muchs fun, i am totally in love with Lindys Sprays. They are amazing. I jsut got my first set Prairie Wildflower, I am sure I am gonna grab as many as I can. This set doesn't have a purple but I got the purple by spraying red and blue together. This really made my project come out well. Do check the Post by Prathiksha on Lindys Stamp Gang Sprays.. for more ideas to use these gorgeous sprays now avaial on Lulupu Store

The photo frame is a chipboard die cut from stash and distress painted and sprinkled some gold embossing powder and heat embossed it and that was the part I started the whole project. Also some random stamping and sprinkles of gold heat embossing to match with the frame.

Embellished it with lots of stuff like blings, flowers, thickets,  metal findings, clips, etc…

The sides and backside was painted with purple paint and dry brushed with blue and turquoise.  I used distress paints for the base painting as I dint have any acrylic paints in hand. On the side I added flourishes, stamping and embossing, doest it look like a silk saree? The side part totally reminds me of my moms silk saree.

Pictures loaded inside….

I am just so happy to show you this project, this challenge really made me to do something which ll be with me forever with everlasting memories. Hope to see your gorgeous entries now. Just 5 more days for the challenge to end1

ciao…

love,

Varshitha..

Lindy's Startbursts : a tutorial

Hey everyone

Hope you've all been having fun crafting! I certainly am and also enjoying the many many new products that I've got from LULUPU!! :)

As promised, when i launched the challenge for this fortnight-Magical memories here is a tutorial on how to create backgrounds using Lindy's starburst sprays! :) They're very versatile and give this gorgeous shimmer along with an equally yummy colour as well :)

Gather up the following -
1.CS
2.Lindys sprays of your choice
3.background stamp
4.Gesso
5.archival ink/memento ink
6.stencils
7.modelling paste
8.sponge/dauber

For the first one i just sprayed the colours randomly, dried it with my heat gun and then stamped the Background stamp. simple :) the pics dont do justice to the gorgeous colour/shimmer..

For the next one, i simply placed my stencil cross and then using the dauber inked the stencil. After drying it, I sprayed with my lindys starburst and look at the yummy shine!!

For the next one I used my harlequin stencil and some modelling paste. Then placed my paper into my clearsnap colour catcher! its this little open cardboard box that prevents all the spray from hitting any other surface. super useful!! Then one light coat of gesso and then the sprays.. :)

These sprays are very multifunctional and can be used on a number of surfaces. If one simply applies gesso on a background, the spray will absorb easily.

Thats it from me for today, dont forget to share your magical memory at challenge #21 with us! :)

{General Guidelines - here}

1. You MUST use a picture as a part of your project.

2. Could be a fridge magnet, a shadow box card with a frame look, a altererd frame, a LO with a pic as a focus piece, chipboard mixes media, canvas etc. well just about anything as long as there is a picture as the focus of your project and creates a framed look.

3.Mention why you used the picture :) we would love to hear your story :)

4. No backlinking allowed. only fresh entries made after this challenge was announced.

5. The Inlinkz for this challenge will close on November 30th, 2013 at 11:55 PM IST

The winner for this challenge will win this super super gorgeous paper pad from DCWV

and this yummy pack of brads from american crafts

I have a 3 year old daughter who is very very active and every weekend we make it a point to take her out :) There isn't much to do here in hyderabad in terms of going out, but a couple of malls have very nice children play areas :) The picture i'm using is one of my favourite ones of all three of us from one of these weekend outings :)

Its a mixed media canvas :) loads of layers and embellishments :) I will be sharing a tutorial soon of the background i created :)

To create it, I layered the canvas with a coat of gesso and then once dry, used my stencils and modelling paste to give the raised effect. once dry, i coated it with gesso once again and then sprayed away with LINDY'S!!! this product is the bestest!!! i absolutely adore it and love love the colours and shimmers they have!!!

some closeups of the canvas :)

Those buttons are a gift from my husband's 90-year old grandmother who had saved them up to give to someone who loved sewing as much as her! (i guess i came closest with my love of crafting!! :)

My botanical odyssey paper pad was best fitting to this and i have used it almost everywhere on the canvas.

Yes i am very much in love with my mod molds!!! :P ive been using them in almost every project. there are so many designs and also i switch between clay and the glue stick depending on where i want to use them :)

Yes, i do love my sweet husband and my darling lil girl :)

Thats all from me for today! :) We hope you play along :) Ill be back with a tute on creating gorgeous backgrounds with Lindys! :)

Thank you for all the appreciation of my work, it inspires me to create more! :) Leave us some love :)
